Abstract
857,175. Explosive compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. May 29, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 18370/59. Class 9(2). An explosive composition capable of being formed into self-supporting structures comprises at least 44% by weight of pentaerythritol tetranitrate whose average largest dimension is between 0À1 and 2 microns, the largest dimension of all the particles being between 0À1 and 10 microns, 6À5 to 14% by weight of soluble nitrocellulose having an average degree of polymerisation of 2,000 to 3,000, and 15-35% by weight of an essentially non-volatile simple nitrocellulose plasticizer which is mutually insoluble with water, chemically inert to pentaerythritol tetranitrate and essentially a non-solvent for said pentaerythritol tetranitrate. Dynamitegrade nitrocellulose having a nitrogen content of 12À0 to 12À6% is the preferred nitrocellulose and the plasticizer may be acetyl tributyl citrate, dibutyl phthalate, tributyl phosphate, diethyl phthalate, diesolbutyl phthalate, diamyl phthalate, dihexyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate dilauryl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, diallyl phthalate triphenyl phosphate, or tricresyl phosphate. Dinitrotoluene, trinitrotoluene, dinitrobenzene, or trinitrobenzene may also be added. The composition may be sheeted and formed into sleeves to be used in the joining of metallic articles as described in Specification 564,211. Specification 765,305 also is referred to.
