Abstract
857,027. Bending; sizing and reshaping metal sheets. TILGHMAN'S Ltd. April 18, 1958 [March 14, 1957], No. 8418/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] A method of bending metal panels, such as aircraft wing panels, comprises passing a panel to be bent on a conveyer below an impeller wheel which throws shot at the panel and by a peening action causes the panel to bow towards the wheel. An impeller wheel 5 on a carriage 3 adjustable along an inclined track 2 throws steel shot, from a hopper 10, over a limited angle 11 on to a metal plate passed underneath the impeller by a roller conveyer 1. The impeller wheel 5 is positioned to one side of the centre of the conveyer so that the peening action of the shot is greater at that side of the plate and the plate is consequently bowed towards the impeller to a greater degree at that part to'give a curvature varying across the panel. A nozzle 12, Fig. 2 (not shown), projecting shot in jet form and movable across the panel removes any local defects in the desired shape. The speed of the impeller 5 and/or the speed of travel of the panel may be varied so that the shape of the panel is varied along its length.
