Abstract

1347063 Blasting CARBORUNDUM CO 7 June 1971 [17 June 1970] 19209/71 Heading B3D A method of removing crustite scale 28 from an iron or steel product 16 comprises feeding grit less than 0À15 inch long into a centrifugal blast wheel, 30, and rotating the blast wheel at a speed of 1500 to 2000 r.p.m. so as to project the grit at a non-perpendicular angle against the product, the sharp edges of the grit chipping the crustite scale. The product initially has a magnetite scale which is converted to a crustite scale by passing the product through a furnace and cooling chamber. The blast wheel is rotated at a speed of preferably 1750 r.p.m., as compared to a conventional speed of 2250 r.p.m. and is disposed at an angle of 45 to 75 degrees, and preferably 60 degrees to the surface of the product to project the grit along the path 32, 34. The grit 26 has sharp angles and is 0À004 to 0À015 inch long.
