Abstract

659,687. Fenders. CHRISTIANI & NIELSEN, Ltd., and NISSEN, J. Sept. 2, and Nov. 28, 1949. Nos. 22855 and 30497. [Class 113 (i)] In a berth for shipping, a fender construction comprises a weighted fender 5 of substantially circular cross-section in planes normal to the longitudinal axis thereof, the fender being freely rotatable about said axis, a support 6 coaxial with the fender and so arranged with respect to the berth 2 as to permit movement of the fender bodily away from the face 4 of the berth, locating means 8 to position the fender relative to the face of the berth so that a portion of the periphery of the fender projects outwards from the face of the berth for engagement by a ship moving towards the berth, and a guide or guides 3 extending from the face of the berth in an upward direction to guide the support 6 during movement of the fender bodily away from the face of the berth, whereby the fender is engageable by a ship moving towards the berth and is moved thereby bodily away from the face of the berth thus absorbing the momentum of the ship. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the support 6 is horizontal while in the embodiment of Fig. 3 it is normally vertical and is mounted for swinging about a horizontal pivot 10. In another embodiment the support is vertical and is mounted at its opposite ends on horizontal axles supporting rollers co-operating with the guides and the locating means comprises chains.
