Abstract

Structural concrete having unproved compressive strength comprises Portland cement and 0,05 to 1% by weight thereof of one or more siliconates of the general formula: R Si (OM)n O3-n,/2 where R is a methyl, ethyl, propyl, vinyl or allyl radical, M is an alkali metal and n is 1, 2 or 3. Preferred siliconates include sodium monomethyl siliconate, potassium ethyl siliconate, caesium vinyl siliconate and symmetrical dipropyl tetrasodium disiloxanolate. The concrete is prepared by admixing the siliconate with the Portland cement and using the resultant dry mix with aggregate and water; alternatively the siliconate can be added to the water used to prepare a standard concrete mix. Other additives, e.g. freezing preventitives, air entrainment agents, setting regulators, may also be incorporated in the concrete which, if desired, may be reinforced and/or prestressed.
