Abstract

[Also in Group XXXIV] A screw jack comprises a shaft A having an upper portion J in screw-threaded engagement with a jacking member K, which is prevented from rotating by angle bars K<SP>2</SP> the shaft being supported at its lower end in a hole B<SP>1</SP> in a bearing block B by means of fluid E, such as oil, located between the end of the shaft and the bottom of the hole B<SP>1</SP>. A sealing ring D, which may be of rubber or neoprene, is provided. A polygonal head J<SP>1</SP>, for rotating the shaft, has a screwed plug Fl in communication with a vent F in the shaft, by means of which air trapped in the fluid E may be expelled. In a modification, shown in Fig. 2, the shaft A is hollow and has an internally-screw-threaded upper portion J<SP>2</SP> engaging a screw-threaded jacking member L. The jack is power-driven through a wormwheel J<SP>3</SP> secured to the shaft A. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 3, a stepped shaft has a portion M<SP>2</SP> which extends completely through a bearing block B and two seals D<SP>1</SP>, D2 are provided. A similar arrangement is used for prestressing a concrete beam. Specifications 757,510 and 778,913 are referred to.
