Abstract
856,506. Hydraulic dampers. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. April 2, 1959 [April 11, 1958], No. 11307/59. Class 108(3). In a piston and cylinder type dashpot, the piston 3a, 3b, Fig. 2 is hollow. The piston is divided into chambers 5a, 5b by a partition 17. Damping liquid is admitted to the chambers 5a, 5b through a tube 6a having branches 6b, 6c. The ends of the branches 8a, 8b are below the surface of the damping liquid regardless of the orientation of the dashpot. Baffles 11 having holes 10 prevent foaming of the damping liquid. In a simpler embodiment the hollow piston contains one chamber only, into which a tube similar to the tube 6a opens directly. The end of the tube is provided with a baffle and remains below the surface of the liquid at all times. In a further embodiment the dashpot cylinder 1, Fig. 3 is extended downwardly to form a chamber 18. An end 8c of an inlet tube 23 remains below the surface 9 of the damping liquid. A valve member 25 is provided in the inlet tube. A third embodiment is described in which a hollow piston rod communicates with a chamber formed at the top of the dashpot cylinder. This chamber moves with the piston and piston-rod and the end of the piston-rod is so positioned within the chamber that the outlet for the damping liquid into the chamber always remains below the surface of the liquid.
