Abstract

Copolysulphonamides are obtained from three or more reactants, comprising at least one polyamine and at least one polysulphonyl halide, by intimately mixing a solution in aqueous alkali of the polyamine component or components with a solution in a water-immiscible solvent of the polysulphonyl halide component or components. Polymethylene diamines and aromatic polysulphanyl halides are the preferred reagents, but many different types of polyamines and polysulphonyl halides are listed. The copolysulphonamides are more soluble (e.g. in dimethyl formamide) than the corresponding homopolymers. Those obtained from the preferred reactants are fibre-forming. The polysulphonyl halide or mixture of polysulphonyl halides is preferably dissolved in ortho-dichlorobenzene and heated to 90 DEG C., and the polyamine or mixture of polyamines is preferably dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and also heated to 90 DEG C., before the two solutions are vigorously mixed together and the copolysulphonamide allowed to precipitate. The reactants used in the examples are benzene 1 : 3-and 1 : 4-disulphonyl chloride, diphenyl-4 : 41-disulphonyl chloride, naphthalene-2, : 6-disulphonyl chloride, benzene-1 : 3 : 5-trisulphonyl chloride, ethylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, and N, N1-dimethyl hexamethylene diamine. Specification 705,427 is referred to.
