Abstract

856,213. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 8, 1959 [May 8, 1958], No. 14757/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor pressure vessel 12 is supported by tubular legs 17, and contains a core 10 which is supported by tubular legs 16 which pass inside the legs 17. This arrangement allows differences in expansion and reduces thermal stresses. The two tubes 16 and 17 are fastened to a common end plate 21 which is carried between the ends of a beam 23, the beam being supported only at the ends on blocks 24 and being perpendicular to a radius of the vessel passing through the legs. Alternative ways of supporting the tubes are described.
