Abstract
855,836. Hose couplings. RESISTOFLEX CORPORATION. April 18, 1958 [April 30, 1957], No. 12402/58. Class 99(1). In a coupling for a tubular fluid conduit, e.g. for assembling a tubular nipple 22, Fig. 1, to the end of a hose 12, an annular sleeve 20 is provided with a resilient frusto-conical flange-like lip 70 arranged for flexing in the axial direction for engaging the nipple 22 on assembly so as to form a fluid-tight seal therewith the lip 70 being placed in a state of stress when deflected from its axially extending position in a relaxed condition and means being provided for limiting the movement of the nipple 22 relative to the sleeve 20 to prevent deflection of the lip 70 beyond a given position such that the lip 70 retains its frusto-conical configuration throughout the range of assembly. As shown, the hose 12 is provided with a wire braid covered liner 14 of inelastic plastic such as polytetrafluoroethylene. The sleeve 20 is inserted in the end of the hose between the liner 14 and the braid 16 until a shoulder 38 abuts the end of the liner. The sleeve is then screwed into a socket 18 placed around the hose 12 so as to grip the braid 16 between mating surfaces 26, 32 on the socket and sleeve respectively, screwing being by way of a wrench engaging notches in the inner surface of the sleeve. The nipple 22 is screwed into the socket 18 and is provided with a tubular barrel 46 which compresses the liner 14 against the bore of the sleeve and with a frusto-conical face 62 which abuts a correspondingly shaped seat 64 and the lip 70 integral therewith when screwing takes place. The lip 70 when unstressed makes a more acute angle with the sleeve axis than the seat 64, the latter serving to limit the movement of the nipple so as to prevent the lip 70 from snapping over. The nipple is formed at one end with a swivel nut connector 56. Alternatively, the abutting seat on the sleeve has the same inclination as that of the unstressed lip, or the resilient lip is formed on the nipple. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a male connector 98 has a resilient annular reentrant portion 102 joined to an abutment 104 for cooperating with the seat 58 on the nipple when the connector is engaged by a swivel nut 90 secured to the nipple by a locking wire 94. In a further embodiment, not shown, the male connector is screwed against the flared mouth of a metal tubing with a hard metal annular ring interposed between the flared mouth and the resilient portion. Specification 826,220 is referred to.
