Abstract

855,403. Sewing machines. LESLIE, I. A. Jan. 5, 1959 [Feb. 3, 1958], No. 3392/58. Class 112 A portable sewing machine comprises a U-shaped hollow frame, a supporting base which extendslaterally from each side of the frame when the machine is in use, and a part permanently connecting the frame to the base, the frame being pivoted to the connecting part for angular folding- down movement relative to the base in a direction lateral of the machine, and the connecting part being movably attached to the base for movement laterally of the machine to allow bodily movement of the frame towards a side of the base as the frame folds down. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a sewing machine frame 1 is so connected by pairs of pivotal links 4, 5 to bars 3 fixed to a base 2 that the frame may either be disposed upright on the base with the latter extending laterally in both directions, or it may be lowered to rest in a horizontal position on the bars. The frame is held in the raised position by the engagement of a catch member 10,. pivoted on the base, with notched pins 15 on the frame. In the lowered position the frame is held by engagement of member 10 with a notched pin 15<SP>1</SP>. In a modification either links 4 or links 5 may be omitted. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the frame is pivoted at 20 to a member 21 slidably mounted in a slot 22 formed in the base, whereby when member 21 is moved to the outer end of the slot, the frame may be lowered on to the base.
