A bed of the type which can be pivoted into a vertical stored position comprises a bed frame 14 pivoted by pins 23 to a base frame 13, L-shaped arms 28 pivoted to the bed frame 14 by pins 27, tension springs 30 extending between the bed frame 14 and anchor plates 31 pivoted to the L-shaped arms 28, a U-shaped frame 33 attached at its ends to the L-shaped arms 28 and carrying a pivoted bedclothes retaining board 37, a chain 29 extending between each L- shaped arm 28 and the base frame 13 and a head board 38 hinged to the bed frame and provided with brackets 40 which slide on the vertical parts of the U-shaped frame 33. When the bed is in the horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1 the springs are at their maximum extension but are not sufficient to raise the bed. When the bed is in the vertical position the springs are at their minimum extension, the chains 29 are slack and the springs no longer attempt to rotate the bed but instead press the headboard 38 down on a pillow (43) on the bed and the pivoted board 37 down on the bed clothes. The bed is held in the vertical position by gravity. The bed frame also has two pivoted legs (25), on which springs (26) act to retain the legs in both the supportive and stored positions.
