Abstract
855,294. Electric flow-meters. COOK, H. July 8, 1959 [April 14, 1958], No. 11809/58. Class 40 (1). A flow-meter of the hot wire anemometer/ Wheatstone bridge type which is not subject to zero drift and sensitivity variation with change of ambient temperature comprises a pair of thermistors T1, T2 (Fig. 2), separately heated and subject to the gas flow connected on opposite sides of the bridge to which current is fed through potentiometers P1, P2. These potentiometers are individually adjusted during temperature cycling with zero gas flow until the indicating instrument MA shows a steady zero. A third thermistor T3 subject to the same conditions as T1 and T2 is placed in series with MA. The variable resistor VR2 is adjusted until the indicating instrument MA shows no sensitivity variation with temperature. The positions of the thermistors T1, T2 with respect to the gas jets may be adjusted to compensate for their different sensitivities. Pressure compensation could be applied by means of an adjustable resistance in series with the indicator and driven by an evacuated capsule. The embodiment shown in Fig. 1 is intended for use as a vertical speed indicator wherein the two main thermistors T1, T2 are mounted in a sealed chamber 3 directly opposite two nozzles 1, 2. Nozzle 1 is connected with a heatinsulated container 5, the other nozzle 2 being connected with a tubular static head 7.
