907,962. Measuring apparatus. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. March 18, 1959 [Dec. 18, 1957], No. 39391/57. Class 40 (1). Apparatus for compensating in accordance with a physical quantity the indication or recording of a second physical quantity represented as a function of the values of two resistors 1, 2, comprises means, e.g. a tapped resistor 15 and swamping resistors 13 and 14, for supplying equal constant currents to each of resistors 1 and 2 and applying the difference in potential across these resistors to a series combination of resistors 18, 19 and 12, and measuring the potential developed across 19 and 12, e.g. by a self-balancing potentiometer, the value of resistor 12 being a function of the variable to be compensated for. Measuring the calorific value of a combustible gas.-The gas, in known manner, is applied to a heat exchanger at a volumetric rate proportional to the rate of flow of a liquid to the heat exchanger and is burnt in the heat exchanger. Resistance thermometers at the inlet to and outlet from the heat exchanger are connected at 1 and 2 and compensation for the difference between the ambient temperature and pressure at the time of the test and standard conditions is given by a known form of correction device, Fig. 1 (not shown), involving a resistor of which the value is a function of ambient temperature and pressure and which is connected at 12.
