Abstract

The invention comprises 1-alkyl-4-aminoquinaldinium salts of the formula: <FORM:0855212/IV(b)/1> wherein n is an integer of from 6 to 17 inclusive and X is an amino. The compounds are prepared by heating 4-aminoquinaldine with a C7-18 alkylhalide in presence or absence of an organic solvent for at least 25 hours, the halide amino X being converted if desired into other anions by double decomposition with, for example, acetates, bicarbonates, lactates, succinates, maleates and tartrates.ALSO:A bactericidal composition comprises as the active ingredient 1-alkyl-4-amino-quinaldinium salts of the formula: <FORM:0855212/VI/1> wherein n is an integer of from 6 to 17 inclusive and X is an anion (e.g. halide, acetate, bicarbonate lactate, succinate, maleate or tartrate), dissolved in water or aqueous alcohol.
