Class 117 In apparatus for separating pieces of solid material approximately according to specific gravity an annular bed of steel blade springs 1 is held cantilever fashion on lugs 2 on a fixed cylindrical wall 3. The springs are in vertical groups and arranged in closely spaced side-by-side relation. Material is fed from a pipe 27 into a trough 26 mounted on a rotary shaft 9 driven by a motor, not shown, and the material is delivered to the upper ends of the springs. An outer cylindrical wall 4 is rotated in the same direction as, but at a slower speed than, the feed trough, i.e. one quarter of the speed, and for this purpose reduction gearing 13, 14, 16 and 17 is arranged between the shaft 9 and a driven sleeve 18 which surrounds the shaft and is connected to the wall 4 through radial arms 24. An annular distributing plate 28 is secured to the arms 24 and a fixed annular plate 23 is arranged on the wall 3. Four curved guide blades 29-32 are carried by the wall 4 and their lower edges are arranged parallel with and closely spaced from the upper springs of the bed and the plate 23. Material passes over the plates 28 and 23 and is distributed by the curved guide blades over the bed of springs. Four discharge ports are located in the wall 4 so that pieces of material having a specific gravity lower than a predetermined value will be arrested by the springs and will discharge through the ports to a trough 35 and discharge pipe 37. Pieces having a higher specific gravity pass through the bed of springs and are discharged to a trough 33 and pipe 34.
