Abstract

854,801. Valves. ACF INDUSTRIES Inc. Jan. 26, 1959 [Jan. 30, 1958], No. 2725/59. Class 135. A valve closure seal in which a tapered female seat 24 coacts with a tapered male member 40 having an O-ring 50 in a groove 48 and a deformable band 58 encircling the ring and loosely held captive, e.g. by the arms of its L-section entering recesses 54, 56, whereby fluid enters behind the band to effect sealing between the band and seat and the band prevents displacement of the ring. The male member is provided with a stop shoulder 46 whereby the band is not compressed between the two valve members, and this stop may also act as a valve member. The wall 62 of recess 56 over the upper wall of recess 54 may be roughened to prevent sealing between the band and the male member. The male member may be balanced by being attached to a piston 38 sealingly slidable in the valve casing and having both faces exposed to downstream pressure via openings 70. The valve may be operated by a diaphragm.
