Abstract

854,790. Photographic flash lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. July 16, 1958 [July 16, 1957], No. 22892/58. Class 9(2). A photo-flash lamp comprises a sealed envelope enclosing a stem 4 through which extend lead-in wires 6, 8, preferably of nickel, connected to the base 10 at points 12, 14 respectively. The inner ends of the leads 6, 8, which are connected by a filament 16, are coated with an ignition paste 18 usually containing an oxidizer and zirconium metal in a nitro-cellulose base. A frame supporting a strip 20 of magnesium comprises nickel wires 24, 26 joined together by molybdenum wires 28, 30, the wire 30 being passed through the strip 20 and wire 28 being attached to lead 6, while molybdenum wires 32 connect the sides of the strip to the frame. To prevent hot particles falling into the neck of the bulb, an asbestos disc 34 is placed on the stem 4. A molybdenum tab 36 is provided for lead 6 to retard heat conduction to stem 4. Preferably an ignition coating 38 comprising a mixture of zirconium powder and nitro-cellulose binder is applied to the lower end of the strip 20. The gas filling is oxygen with about 2% to 12% of nitrogen by volume. The framework supporting the magnesium strip may be cemented to the glass envelope instead of being attached to the bead 6.
