854,592. Machines with permanent magnets; mounting rotors. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1956 [April 6, 1956], No. 37004/56. Class 35. A generator for creating a sharp electric pulse at the time of cutting of a shear drum comprises a magnet 22 secured to a non-magnetic member 14 and having a pole 24 arranged during rotation of the member 14 to pass a stationary pickup head 26 which includes a coil 32 surrounding a core 28 and an enveloping magnetic shield 40 having in the side adjacent the member 14 a small opening 42 which exposes adjacent the rotative path of the magnet pole 24 an end of the core 28; means are provided to so couple the member 14 to rotate in synchronism with the shear drum that as the drum is cutting the magnet 22 passes the opening 42 and creates the pulse in the coil 32. As shown the member 14 is a ring adjustably secured by grub screws 16 to a shaft 6 carrying the drum, and the coil output leads 34, 36 may be connected to an amplifier 36. The magnetic shield 40 prevents the flux from reaching the core 28 until magnet 22 is directly under it.
