Abstract

854,300. Packaging. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Aug. 1, 1958 [Feb. 7, 1958: July 15, 1958], No. 24906/58. Class 94(1). A wrap around cardboard carrier for cans or bottles has two overlapping flaps forming the top of the carrier, one flap having a latching flap carrying catches and the other flap having slots engaged by the catches whereby the carrier is held tightly wrapped around the cans. In one embodiment, the container comprises parts 1-3, 6 and 7, the part 6 having a latching flap 10 carrying tongues 16 and catches 12. Each catch engages an edge 14 of a slot 13 and each tongue engages in a slot 18. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, a catch and a tongue engage opposite edges of the same slot 23, and the tongue 16 and corresponding end of the slot have slits 27, 26 to assist in retaining the tongue. The flap 10 can be secured with adhesive to the panel 7 and the tongues 16 dispensed with. Slitted cut-outs 22 are provided when the container is used for packing cans and the catches and tongues may lie within the recessed ends of the cans. As shown in Fig. 5, the rim of one can is raised above the rim of the corresponding can in the adjacent row.
