854,264. Stuffing-boxes. BOGE G.m.b.H. Jan. 9, 1957 [Jan. 28, 1956; Jan. 30, 1956; June 11, 1956], No. 891/57. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXII] The seal for the piston-rod 1 of an hydro-pneumatic shockabsorber is carried by an inwardly-extending neck 5 carried by the end closure 4 of the shock - absorber. As shown, the seal is in the form of a packing 6 in a holder 7 free to move laterally and sealed to the neck by a gasket 9. Pneumatic pressure in the space 10 above the liquid pressurizes the latter and thus causes the holder 7 to bear against the gasket 9. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the gasket 9 and the corresponding bearing-surfaces of the holder 7 and the neck 5 constitute the surface of a sphere having its centre lying on the axis of the piston-rod.
