Abstract

854,224. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Dec. 15, 1958 [Dec. 23, 1957], No. 39978/57. Class 38 (5). [Also in Groups XXII and XXXV] A protective device for fluid-cooled electrical apparatus comprises a conductive member heated by the current flowing through the apparatus and cooled by the flow of fluid, which member is associated with a resettable heatresponsive device which energizes an alarm or controls the current when the temperature of the conductive device exceeds a determined value. A welding gun or other apparatus is fed with current through a conductor 8 and the conductive member 10, heat from the latter acting on a thermostatic switch 11 which disconnects the supply 13 through a contactor 12. The thermostatic switch may be of the manually or automatic resetting type. The conductive member should preferably have a resistance per unit length 20% greater than that of the conductors supplying the apparatus. The system may be employed with oil-cooled cable systems.
