Abstract

1,076,433. Safety arrangements for electrically heated blankets. INDOHEEM N.V. March 16, 1966 [March 16, 1965], No. 11621/66. Heading H2H. A safety device for an electrically heated blanket comprises a heating element 6 for the blanket which is supplied from an A.C. source 1, 2 by way of the normally open contacts 3, 4 of a relay 10 and a diode 5, the arrangement being such that current passes through the heating element during the half cycle when the supply terminal 1 is positive with respect to terminal 2. During the other half cycle the full supply voltage appears across the diode 5 and this voltage is rectified by a diode 7 to charge a capacitor 8 so as to energize the winding of the relay 10 thereby to maintain closed the contacts 3, 4 which are initially closed manually. Thus a fault such as an open circuit in the heating element circuit, a breakdown of the diode 5 or a short circuit between the element 6 and a protective conductive sheath 13 therearound will interrupt the charging of the capacitor 8 and hence de-energize the winding of the relay 10. A bi-metal switching device 11, 12 may be used to provide automatic control of the blanket temperature.
