Abstract

1403044 Protective arrangements NORTH ERNELECTRIC CO 23 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 41417/72 Heading H2K An electric blanket 10 of the kind having a heating element 12 and a sensing wire 14 separated by heat sensitive material has an overload protective arrangement comprising a radiation emitting diode 24 connected in series with the wire 14, and radiation responsive means 26 connected in series with a control device having contacts 20 in series with the element 12. Normally, the current through the wire 14 is such that the diode 24 emits sufficient light for the resistance of a light sensitive resistor 26, e.g. a cadmium sulphide cell, to be low, so that a bimetallic element 22 of the control device is sufficiently heated to maintain contacts 20 closed. Under overload conditions the resistance of the heat sensitive material in the blanket decreases, providing a low resistance path between the element 12 and the wire 14. The current through the diode 24 is reduced, the resistance of the resistor 26 increases and the control device opens its contacts 20. The blanket is controlled by a bi-metallic switch 16, 18 and a manual switch 28. To prevent incorrect operation due to a defective resistor 26, the switch 28 has a fixed contact 28c which is engaged momentarily by the moving contact as the switch is closed. This momentarily connects the resistor 26 directly across the supply so that it fuses if its initial resistance is too low.
