Abstract
854,104. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd., SIMMONS, A. W., and WASHBOURN, J. March 18, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 9532/57. Class 103 (1). In a variable load valve device in which is provided a control spring against which is balanced the opposed action, on a diaphragm, of the pressures in the upper and lower chambers of a vacuum brake cylinder, the single flexible diaphragm is replaced by a damper of the kind sealed by upper and lower diaphragms which act in unison as a single controlling diaphragm of the variable load valve and comprises a first (upper) chamber 4 above the upper diaphragm 2 which is connected to the lower chamber of a vacuum brake cylinder, and a second (lower) chamber 6 below the lower diaphragm 3 which connects the upper chamber of the vacuum brake cylinder; a third chamber 15 being provided for connection to the vacuum train pipe and a first valve 13 controlling communication between the first chamber and the second chamber. A second valve 17 controls communication between the first chamber and the third chamber via hollow stem 11. A control spring 8 is arranged to be compressed by vehicle weight measuring means 10 to an extent determined by the weight of the vehicle, the resultant thrust being applied to the lower diaphragm 3 in a direction to close the first valve 13 and open the second valve 17.
