Abstract

853,701. Cleaning tanks. KENNEDY, M. T. April 22, 1959 [May 14, 1958], No. 13739/59. Class 138(1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a tank cleaning device comprising a rotatable turret 10 supporting a nozzle unit for rotation about an axis B at right angles to that A about which the turret rotates and a liquid conduit for supplying cleaning liquid to the nozzle unit for projection as a high-velocity jet or jets, the nozzle unit consists of one or more nozzles 11 so arranged that the reaction of the liquid jet or jets causes rotation thereof about its own axis B, a driving connection being provided between the nozzle unit and the turret 10 whereby the turret is also rotated by the jet reaction, also braking means comprising a brake member in contact with an enclosed body of braking liquid, relative rotation of the brake member and the braking liquid being caused by rotation of the nozzle unit. The liquid enters the sleeve 17 parallel to the axis A and is diverted through the openings 18 by the end wall 27 of conical shape tapering with concave curvature to a central pointed end. A shaft 55 threaded on to the end wall 56 of the nozzle carrier 43 is connected to a worm 57 meshing with a worm wheel 58 fixed to the liquid distributing sleeve 17 so as to provide the drive connection between the nozzles 11 and the turret 10. As the nozzles 11 make one revolution about the axis B, the worm 57 will make a corresponding revolution and will, therefore, move along the worm wheel 58 the distance equal to one, two, three or four teeth according to whether the worm is a single, double. triple or quadruple thread gear. Therefore, each nozzle 11 will generate a number of successive jet impingement stripes on the tank walls corresponding to the number of teeth on the worm wheel 58, starting from one wall section and returning to the same wall section for each turn of the turret 10 about its axis A. The above-mentioned braking means comprises the worm 57 forming an integral part of a drum 65 which is an integral axial continuation of the nozzle shaft 55 so as to rotate therewith and contains a viscous liquid immersed in which is a brake member 72 shown, Fig. 2, in the form of a worm. This member 72 is connected at its lower end to the turret 10. The angularity of the nozzles 11 may be adjusted for controlling the reaction effect of the cleaning liquid by supporting on the axle 86 of the nozzle carrier 43 a bevel gear which meshes with the bevel gears 85 on the inlet legs 46 of the nozzles.
