Abstract

852,678. Use of wetting agents in paper or pulp manufacture. CANADIAN ANILINE & EXTRACT CO. Ltd. Jan. 19, 1959 [March 18, 1958], No. 1928/59. Class 96. In the production of paper or pulp on a Fourdrinier or like machine, a non-ionic, surface-active agent, which is a polyoxyethylated compound obtainable by condensing an organic compound of 8 to 18 carbon atoms and which contains active hydrogen, with 7 to 25 molar proportions of ethylene oxide, is applied in aqueous solution to the upper side of the pulp web, e.g. by spraying, sufficiently in advance of the suction zone to allow time for the wet web to become impregnated before it reaches the suction zone, so that more white water is extracted there than would otherwise be practicable. The organic compound may be octyl or nonyl phenol, a fatty alcohol, a fatty acid, a fatty amine, or a thio-alcohol. 1.2 lbs. of wetting agent may be sprayed, as a 2% solution, per ton of pulp.
