Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble dyes of formula: <FORM:0852493/IV (c)/1> where A1 and A11 are alkylene radicals which may be the same or different, R1 and R11 are substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicals which may be the same or different, Z is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, trifluoromethyl or acidylamino group and Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom. They may be made by diazotizing appropriate cyanoanilines and coupling with the required component or by acylating, with an acylating agent derived from R1 or R11, appropriate N- di- (hydroxyalkyl) dyes. A1 and A11 are specified as ethylene and trimethylene. R1 and R11 are specified as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, cyanomethyl, chloroethyl, phenyl and anisyl. Further specified values for Z are chlorine, methyl, ethyl and acetyl-, propionyl- and methylsulphonylamino. Chlorine and bromine atoms are specified for Y. The products dye artificial fibres, e.g. cellulose acetate rayon, polyhexamethylene adipamide and polyethylene terephthalate fibres, preferably by a dispersed aqueous process, in red shades. Examples are provided illustrating the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing polyester fibres. In the Provisional Specification A1 and A11 may be substituted the a -chloromethylethylene group being specified. Specifications 422,843 and 447,561 are referred to.
