Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula:- <FORM:0868468/IV(c)/1> where B is a substituted or unsubstituted benzene or naphthalene residue free from SO3H and COOH groups, R and R1 are the same g -chloro-b -hydroxypropyl, g -bromo-b -hydroxypropyl or epoxypropyl radical, X is a cyano, carbonamido substituted carbonamido, carbalkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkylsulphonyl, b -hydroxyethylsulphonyl, sulphonamido or substituted sulphonamido residue situated #s- or pto azo, Y is H or an alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, trifluoromethyl, cyano, carbonamido, substituted carbonamido, carbalkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkylsulphonyl, b -hydroxy ethyl sulphonyl, sulphonamido or substituted sulphonamido radical and Z is H or a halogen atom. The dyes are made by diazotizing appropriate anilines containing X, Y and Z and coupling with the required di-N-substituted anilines. Representative of values specified for X other than those given above are:-carbondimethylamido, carbomethoxy, acetyl, ethylsulphonyl and sulphon-methyl- and -b -hydroxyethylamido. Representative of values specified for Y other than those given above are:-bromine, methyl, methoxy, carbon-b -hydroxyethyl-amido, carboethoxy, acetyl, methylsulphonyl and sulphondimethyl-amido. Z is specified as Cl or Br and substituents indicated for B are halogen, alkyl, trifluoromethyl, alkoxy and acidylamino. The dyes colour textile materials comprising natural fibres, e.g. cotton, silk and wool, and artificial fibres, e.g. cellulose acetate rayon, cellulose triacetate, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyacrylonitrile and polyethylene terephthalate fibres. The dyes are preferably used in a dispersed form. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring processes red and orange shades being obtained.
