Abstract

3-Chloro-4-aminobenzonitrile and 2-amino-5-cyanobenzotrifluoride are made by reducing the corresponding nitro compounds. They are dyestuff intermediates, cf. Group IV (c).ALSO:The invention comprises dyestuffs of formula:-<FORM:0756079/IV(c)/1> where X is halogen or a cyano or trifluoromethyl group, Y is hydrogen or halogen, 2 is hydrogen, halogen or a methyl or trifluoromethyl group, R1 is a b -hydroxy- or -cyano-ethyl, g -hydroxypropyl or b 2- g -dihydroxy-propyl group and R2 is an alkyl radicle of not more than 4 carbon atoms or a b -hydroxyethyl or g -hydroxypropyl group. They may be made by diazotizing an appropriate 4-cyanobenzamine and coupling with the desired end component. The dyestuffs dye cellulose acetate rayon, polyamide fibres, e.g. nylon, and polyester fibres, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, in orange to crimson shades. Aqueous dispersions are used for dyeing the addition of a carrier such as diphenyl being advantageous when polyester fibres are dyed. In examples the azo components used are: 3-chloro- and 3, 5-dichloro-4-amino-benzonitrile, 2-amino-5-cyano-benzotrifluoride and 2, 4-dicyano-aniline and the coupling components are: N, N-bis-b -hydroxyethylaniline, m-chloroaniline, m-aminobenzotrifluoride and -m-toluidine, N-ethyl, N-b -hydroxyethyl-, -g -hydroxy-propyl- and -b , g -dihydroxypropyl-aniline, N-b -hydroxyethyl, N-b 1-cyanoethyl-aniline and -m-toluidine, N-n-butyl, N-b -hydroxyethyl -m-chloroaniline and N-b , g -dihydroxypropyl, N-b 1-cyanoethyl-m-toluidine.
