Abstract

910,306. Benzene-monoazo-benzene dyes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 17, 1960 [July 20, 1959], No. 24819/59. Class 2(4). The invention comprises water-insoluble dyes of formula where A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>11</SP> are alkylene radicals of 2-4 C atoms, R is an alkyl group of 1-4 C atoms, which may be substituted, R<SP>1</SP> and R" are alkyl groups of 1-4 C atoms and may be substituted, or a benzene residue, and Z is H, Hlg or an alkyl radical of 1-4 C atoms which may be substituted. The dyes are made by diazotising an appropriate nitraniline and coupling with the required N-disubstituted component or by acylating the corresponding dialcoholic dyes. Specified for A<SP>1</SP> and A" are ethylene, propylene and butylene radicals. Representative of specified values for R are methyl, isopropyl, n-butyl and #-chloroethyl groups, for R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are ethyl, isopropyl, chloromethyl and p-methoxyphenyl and for Z are Cl, Br ethyl and trifluoromethyl. Preferably both R<SP>1</SP> arid R<SP>11</SP> are Me. The dyes are used to colour artificial textile fibres such as polyesters, polyamides, cellulose esters; e.g. secondary and tri-acetate, and polyacrylo-nitriles. Orange to bluish-red shades are obtained. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring polyethylene terephthalate fibres.
