Abstract

852,173. Mixing rubber or the like. FARREL-BIRMINGHAM CO. Inc. Aug. 5, 1958 [March 20, 1958]. No. 25024/58. Class 86 [Also in Group XIII] Liquid, e.g. water, is removed from a plastic material, such as rubber, being treated in a mixing chamber by subjecting the material to pressure by means of a ram so arranged in a guideway that the separated liquid may escape from the mixing chamber without escape of the material. As shown, the mixing chamber 10 has conventional rotors and a discharge door 12. The charge is introduced over a slideway 18, the ram 13 being raised to the dotted line position. The ram is rectangular in plan and is guided by a shoot 14, the clearances between the ram and the shoot being sufficient to permit liquid to pass to above the ram, but too small to allow the rubber or the like to do likewise. The ram is raised and lowered by a double acting cylinder and piston 22, 23 and the liquid which is squeezed out of the rubber collects in troughs 27 from which it is removed by a suction pump and tubes 28, the latter being flexible so that springs 31 and curved guides 30 keep them correctly presented to the shoot 14 and ram rod 19. The slideway 18 is movable to a vertical position to close the side of the shoot 14. The removal of liquid from the mass may be accelerated by circulating a heating medium in the jacket 11. in which case the ram 13 is periodically raised to permit evolved gases to escape through a vent 35, or vacuum may be applied to the mixing chamber.
