Abstract

851,894. Agricultural implements. SMITH, A., and BAGGS, B. D. Jan. 14, 1957, No. 1382/57. Classes 6(1) and 6(3). A mowing machine comprises rotatable blades mounted in a cutter bar to rotate about vertical axes and driven from a gear-box 124, the cutter bar being mounted adjustably about a vertical axis in a frame 107 which is pivoted on an intermediate frame 106 which is itself pivoted on a frame 104 rigidly attached to the rear axle casings 13 of the tractor. A hydraulic cylinder 115a is provided to move the frame 106 so that the cutters may be retracted and extended laterally to avoid obstructions. The cutters are driven from the tractor power shaft 14 by means of a gear box 35a and a chain drive mounted on pivotal frames 119, 121 which can move freely as the cutters are extended and retracted. In a modification the cutters may be mounted between the front and rear wheels of the tractor in which case the frame 106 is pivoted in a tubular member mounted longitudinally on the side of the tractor and containing a drive shaft connected by chain gearing to the power shaft of the tractor. The cutters may be driven by a hydraulic motor. In a further modification, the cutter bar may be pivoted on a frame attached to the tractor the frame being raised and lowered by means of the tractor lift mechanism. As shown in Fig. 2, the blades may be used to hoe the ground. When the blades are raised clear of the ground they can be used for cutting vegetation.
