Abstract

851,506. Generating combustion products under pressure. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., J. Feb. 10, 1959 [Feb. 10, 1958], No. 4222/58. Class 51 (1). In a liquid fuel combustion apparatus consisting of a substantially cylindrical flame tube 10 with axially spaced rings of holes 12 in the tube for admitting air from a surrounding jacket 11, the end wall 14 of the tube has a plurality of gaps or gutters formed in its periphery each being axially aligned with a hole in the adjacent ring of holes downstream of the end wall. The gaps or gutters direct streams of air along the inner surface of the flame tube to meet other streams of air flowing inwardly through the first ring of holes 12 thereby promoting toroidal swirl. Bridge pieces 15 in contiguous relation hold the end wall in the flame tube, the bridge pieces corresponding with the gaps or recesses 16 in the edge of the end wall or in another embodiment with gutters or flutes 20, Fig. 4, formed by crimping the edge of the end wall. Alternatively air may be admitted through apertures 21, Fig. 6, in the form of flutes in the flame tube extension 17 corresponding with and spaced from gutters 20 in the end wall to form gaps 22. In another form the flutes 21 engage the gaps or recesses 16 and the gaps 22 are omitted.
