Abstract

The preparation of a reaction product of dimethylaminoazophenylarsonic acid and zirconium oxychloride in equimolar proportions is described.ALSO:<PICT:0851270/III/1> Dimethylaminoazophenylarsonic acid (DAAPA) is reacted with an excess of zirconium oxychloride over 1:1 molar ratio in aqueous hydrochloric acid and the reaction product applied to an inert porous material to provide a detector for ionisable fluoride in a gas to be tested, which produces a deep pink to brown coloration. The reaction product may be prepared by dissolving DAAPA in a mixture of glycerin, ethanol and hydrochloric acid and adding a solution of zirconium oxychloride in hydrochloric acid. The glycerin may be reduced or omitted or replaced by sugar. The fine suspension produced may be applied to a filter paper or a glass fibre cloth. As shown in the Figure, the suspension may be applied through an opening 4 in a transparent cover 3 to a filter paper 5 having holes 6 supported on a flanged funnel 1 and held in position by clamps 7. The gas to be tested is drawn over the impregnated filter paper by means of bulb 8. Under standardised conditions quantitative results may be achieved. The air flow may be varied by adjusting the position of a screw 13 in a nipple 11.
