Abstract

1,075,054. Gas analysis. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Sept.1, 1964, No.35713/64. Heading G1B. A gas dosimeter comprises a sealed transparent tube 2 having a frangible end 5, and a bed of colorimetric indicator reactive with a gas to be detected to give a colour change within the tube and spaced from the end 5 by a plug 10 of porous material. The purpose of the plug 10 is to prevent extraneous air currents from reaching the surface 12 of the indicator bed. Gaseous diffusion into the bed causes a colour change in the indicator the length of the colour change zone being dependent on the concentration of the gas to be detected. In draught-free conditions the plug 10 may be replaced by length of narrowbore tube, but a small plug will also be required to keep the indicator bed in place. The indicator may be activated alumina impregnated with silver cyanide for H 2 S, a granular solid carrying the reaction product of tetramethyldiaminodiphenylmethane and an oxidizing agent for SO 2 , silica gel carrying a benzidine derivative for NO 2 Cl 2 or Br 2 , or activated alumina with thymol blue for CO 2 , and the plug 10 may be a wad of fibre or cloth such as glass wool or cloth or organdy or of sintered glass. A removable cap or stopper may be provided in place of the frangible end 5, and the tube 2 may be marked with a suitable scale or the tube may be mounted on a card incorporating a scale.
