[Also in Division H1] Apparatus for measuring the methane concentration of an atmosphere comprises two thermocouples covered with catalysts which react differently on an oxygen-methanol reaction in the presence of methane, whereby the difference in temperature is indicative of the methane concentration. As shown (Fig. 1), a tank 10 carrying liquid methanol 11 is fitted with a wick 12 enabling methanol vapour to be carried by the external atmospheric gas, which enters the housing 1 by apertures 9 and leaves by apertures 8, up through a chimney 5 to two thermocouples 14, 15 coated with different catalytic materials, each of which causes the methanol vapour to react with the atmospheric oxygen to raise the temperature of the thermocouples. The catalyst on thermocouple 14 enables methane in the atmosphere to enhance the oxygen-methanol reaction and its temperature is raised still further: the catalyst or thermocouple 15 is such that a methane atmosphere restricts this reaction, and its temperature is lowered. Thus, a meter 13 indicating the difference in thermocouple outputs may be calibrated in terms of percentage methane content in the surrounding atmosphere.
