Abstract
<PICT:0837477/III/1> In an apparatus for measuring the concentration of a component of a gaseous mixture by passing the mixture through a counter current absorption column, the absorption column comprises an outer member and an inner member around which there is a helix down which the absorption reagent liquid runs, a space being provided between the helix and the outer member to permit the gas to flow axially therethrough. The column is conveniently of circular section and the helix may be a wire wound round the inner member. In the Figure, gas enters at 3 and leaves at 4. The absorption reagent is introduced via line 7 and aperture 8, passes down the wire helix 9 and leaves through aperture 10. The apparatus may be employed for determining the sulphur dioxide concentration in air, for example by using as absorbent hydrogen peroxide to form sulphuric acid, and determining the amount of acid formed by measuring the conductivity for example in the apparatus claimed in Specification 837,476. Alternatively, a starch-iodine solution may be employed and the colour change measured photo-electrically in the apparatus claimed in Specification 837,478. Specification 837,479 also is referred to.
