Abstract

A colorimetric reagent for sulphur dioxide comprises a chemically inert granular solid carrying the blue reaction product of tetramethyldiaminodiphenylmethane (TDD) and a dilute iodine, bromine, or nitric acid solution. On contact with a gas containing sulphur dioxide, the blue colour of the reagent is bleached. The carrier solid is preferably an adsorbent, e.g. silica gel or diatomaceous earth. The reagent may be prepared by mixing the TDD with the granular solid impregnated with a solution of iodine, bromine, or nitric acid in water, ethanol, or glycerine. In use, the ends of a transparent sealed tube containing the reagent may be opened and air or other gas passed through the tube; if a known volume of gas is passed, the length over which bleaching occurs affords a quantitative measure of the sulphur dioxide. The reagent may be supplied as an ampoule containing silica gel impregnated with the solution of iodine, bromine, or nitric acid and a second ampoule containing a non-adsorbent carrier coated with TDD, suitable non-adsorbent carriers being sand, small glass beads, glass powder and talc; the two carriers are thoroughly mixed before use. The testing method may be used for the detection of leaks in refrigerator coils, for controlling the concentration of sulphur dioxide used in bleaching wool or straw, or in the control of organic syntheses, e.g. the preparation of hydroxylamine.
