Abstract
A gas detector comprises an evacuated transparent envelope, with a breakable end, containing a chemical, capable of a colour change when in contact with a specific gas, preferably dispersed on the surface of granules or pellets of an inert material. Oxygen is detected by the use of manganous oxide dispersed on silica gel (chromatographic grade, 50-100 mesh previously dried at 430 DEG C.). Manganous carbonate is first prepared by mixing solutions of manganous chloride and sodium bicarbonate, filtering, washing successively with water 96%, alcohol, pentane and drying. The resulting manganese carbonate is mixed with 8 parts by weight of silica gel in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. The granules, still in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, are transferred to glass tubes. The tubes are heated in vacuo at 430 DEG C. for 45 min., to give manganous oxides, and sealed. Carbon dioxide estimation is effected by using a similar evacuated tube containing rosaniline hydrochloride (dispersed in acid washed sand) which has been decolourized with hydrazine hydrate. This reagent rapidly changes from white to red when contacted with carbon dioxide.
