Abstract

850,769. Continuous metal heating furnaces; charging and discharging. HAYES Inc., C. I. Dec. 5, 1958, No. 39225/58. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XXX] Work containers 20a ... 20f, Fig. 1, are moved through a furnace 10, by one or more latches 78, Fig. 3, pivotally mounted in members 66 which are pivotally connected by links 100, each latch being moved automatically to engage a container by sliding over a roller 92 when the member is moved in the direction of the arrow and retracted when the series is moved in the opposite direction. The ends of the series 66, 100 are connected by chains 104, 120 to a cable 110 which passes over circuit breakers 114, 118 to an electrically driven winch 116. If jamming occurs within the furnace, the increased tension of the cable will actuate one of the circuit breakers to put the motor of the winch out of action. The containers are mesh baskets, Fig. 7, having skids 22 secured to their bottoms which travel on the floor of the furnace. The front of each basket is attached to a transverse rail 24 which is engaged by a latch 78. The furnace floor has a central trough 56 which in the heating chamber 36 is formed by a pair of spaced corrugations 58. The platform of the discharging elevator 48 is provided with a trough which is a continuation of the trough 56. Work containers are introduced through a cover 18 on to charging elevator 16 from which they are moved into the position occupied by container 20b by a reciprocating sweep 28 actuated by counterweighted chains 30 and a drum 32. Chamber 36 is muffle heated and cooling section 44 has a water jacket on all four sides, Fig. 9 (not shown). The roof 42 and side walls of the furnace entrance are also water cooled, Fig. 8 (not shown).
