Abstract

850,759. Ironing-presses. BAKER PERKINS Ltd. July 8, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 22216/58. Class 138 (2). A shirt is fitted on to a buck 12 provided with side expanders 33 (Fig. 6), at a dressing- station and moved to a pressing station where the back and front of the shirt are pressed by a pair of heated outer bucks 13, and heated air is introduced into the. centre buck 12 to inflate, de-wrinkle and dry the sides, sleeves and yoke of the shirt. The cuffs of the shirt are sealed by clips 53, 58 (Fig. 6) and the tail of the shirt by pads 66 on the bucks 13, and clamps (not shown), so that most of the heated air passes through the shirt. Two central bucks mounted on converging tracks (Fig. 2) enable one shirt to be fitted while another is being pressed. Each central buck is mounted on a carriage 19 comprising a sleeve 20 embracing a tubular guiderod 21 and a roller 22 running on a track 23. The carriages 19 are connected to the ends of a chain 24 extending round a sprocket 25 mounted on a shaft 26 carrying a pinion 27 engaging a rack 28 which is reciprocable by a doubleacting pneumatic cylinder Q. The outer bucks 13 are operated by a double-acting pneumatic piston and cylinder P (Fig. 3) connected between the ends of levers 70 pivoted at 71. As the bucks 13 move outwardly from their pressing position they engage fixed stops 75 (Fig. 2) and spring- loaded stops 76 and therefore are moved to a diverging position. Doors 18 close automatically when a buck 12 arrives at the pressing station and the outer bucks are prevented from moving inwardly until the doors 18 are closed. The side expanders 33 are actuated by racks 34 meshing with a common pinion 35. One rack is connected to the piston-rod 36 of a cylinder U so that admission of air to cylinder U withdraws the expanders against the projecting influence of a spring 37. The tail clamps (32, Fig. 7, not shown), are pivoted to the buck at their lower ends and moved away from their clamping position by a pneumatic cylinder T acting against spring-pressure through linkage 41, 42. Cylinders T, U are connected by pipes 47, 48 to spigots (Fig. 4, not shown) which are adapted to enter female coupling-members for air supply when the buck arrives at the dressing-station. The air supply to cylinders T, U is controlled by foot pedal and lever-operated valves respectively (not shown). The heated air for inflating the shirt is supplied by a fan 16 (Fig. 1) heater 17 and a pipe 15 which is connectable to the neck 14 of the buck by a pneumatically-operated shutter 65. Internal vanes 59 (Fig. 6) direct the air within the buck 12. Figures 10, 11 (not shown) illustrate pneumatic and electric control-circuits for the press. They include time delay switches for delaying the supply of hot air to the centre buck until the outer bucks have been closed on it for a predetermined time and for controlling the time for which the outer bucks remain closed.
