Abstract

916,108. Ironing presses. McGKAW-EDISON CO. April 18, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 13913/61. Class 138 (2). In a sleeve-pressing machine two bucks 35 fitted with inflatable porous bags 37, are mounted upon a pivot tube 31 and are moved by an air motor 38 from a dressing position (as shown) to a pressing position between pairs of pressing platens 58 whilst the pressure of heated air being supplied to the bucks through tubes 33 is automatically increased. The platens are mounted on arms 56 having pivots 57 and each pair is moved towards the associated buck by an air motor 63 pushing a wedgecam 68 between rollers 69. Position-compensating springs are provided at the rear of each platen (Fig. 5, not shown), and spring means (not shown) are used to restore the platens to their open position; spring means (Fig. 2, not shown) are also provided to return the bucks to their dressing position. As illustrated in Fig. 6, air is supplied to the air motor 38 by a source 43 through a pressure regulator 45, a filter 46 and a solenoid-operated valve 44 having an exhaust device 48. When the piston 65 moves the bucks to their pressing position by means of a piston rod 40, it opens a port 66 to admit air to the motors 63 and causes the platens to move towards the bucks, air being discharged from the motors 63 through a check valve 89 when the valve 44 is opened. Air is supplied to the bucks by a pump 70 through a manifold 74, a conduit 76 and a heat exchanger 17 fitted with a steam heated coil 80. A butterfly-valve 83 operated by an air motor 85 receiving air from the motor 38, is open to permit a proportion of the air to return to the pump 70 from the manifold 74 while the bucks are in their dressing position and is then closed to raise the pressure of the air supplied to the bucks as they move to their pressing position. A solenoid 51 operating the valve 44 may be opened and closed by means of push-buttons 49, 52, respectively, or by means of the pushbutton 49 and a timer device (not shown), the timer device serving to de-energize the solenoid and close the valve 44 after a pre-determined period of time. The platens may be heated by passage of steam through chambers included in the platens (Fig. 5, not shown).
