Abstract

646,677. Vices. EVERED & CO., Ltd., and FOULKES, J. T. Oct. 27, 1948, No. 27864. [Class 61(ii)] In a fluid operated vice, a pair of jaws 7 and 8 movable in slideways 5 and 6 in the base 4 are operated by a fluid piston mechanism whereby a rack moved by the piston rod actuates cam means which effect a simultaneous opening or closing of the jaws. The rack 13, carrying an arm 13a fixed to the outer end 15b of the piston. rod and guided on rods 14, engages pinions 12a, 12b keyed to spindles 11a, 11b rotatably mounted on the base 4. To the upper end of the spindles are attached cams 10a, 10b set oppositely to one another and arranged in gaps 7a, 8a on the under side of the respective jaws 5 and 6 and each bearing on a roller 10c. Outward movement of the piston rod causes the cams to bear on the complementary surfaces of the gaps 7a, 8a and the jaws to close on the work, retraction of the piston by a spring causing the jaws to open through movement of the cams against the rollers 10c. Closing and opening of the jaws may be effected by a double acting piston.
