Abstract

850,686. Transmission-line attenuators and terminations. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 11, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 9456/56. Class 40(8). A termination or attenuator for a coaxial line or waveguide comprises a body composed of at least two portions of lossy material, the portions having different cross-sectional areas and the smaller body being one quarter-wavelength (#/4) long at the operating frequency. The body may be made of a polyester resin loaded with small flake graphite or an ethoxylene resin loaded with cabonyl iron dust. Alternatively, wood may be used. The attenuator shown has five cylindrical portions, the smallest portions 1,9 being #/4 in length and being so dimensioned in relation to the intermediate portions 2, 8 that the waves reflected from the faces 6 are equal in amplitude to those reflected from the faces 5 so that these waves will tend to cancel one another.
