Abstract
837,733. Waveguides; variable attenuators. FLEMING, B. Jan. 1, 1959 [Oct. 1, 1957], No. 30743/57. Class 40 (8). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] Microwave apparatus which may be used as a variable attenuator comprises a waveguide 10, Fig. 1, or other transmission line in which a vane 12 of resistive material is movable. In the case of a rectangular waveguide, vane 12 is parallel to the short side of the guide and is movable perpendicular to the axis of the guide. The position of the vane 12, and hence the proportion of the total power which is absorbed by the vane, is adjusted by a micrometer screw 20. The shape of vane 12 and the adjusting means are modified according to the type of transmission line used. Fig. 10 shows a length of circular waveguide 70 with two end-portions 71 each of which contains a fixed conductive vane 72 at right angles to the required plane of polarization of the transmitted waves. Section 70 contains a resistive vane 73 and is coupled to the end portions 71 by rotatable couplings so that vane 73 may be rotated about the axis of the guide. The attenuation caused by the vane may be varied by altering its temperature by passing a direct current through it. If the D.C. power is much larger than the microwave power, the apparatus can be used as a direct-currentcontrolled attenuator.
