Class 72 A process for adding a pulverized solid material to the blast in a converter comprises suspending the solid in a gas which is then added to the blast in such a manner that there is no loss in pressure at the point of injection. As shown, pulverised lime held in a hopper 7, having means 7a for supplying air, is fed to a pipe 3 by means of a screw device 4 and a flap-valve 6 and air, tapped from a blast supply, upstream of a blowing valve 10, by a pipe 8 is injected downstream of the flap valve to produce a suspension of lime in air. The pipe 8, which may include a compressor to increase the pressure, introduces the suspension into the main blast pipe downstream of the valve 10. A volumetric distributer may be interposed between the hopper and the screw device. It is stated that an even distribution of the pulverized material, which may be iron oxide in an acid Bessemer process, is obtained.
