Abstract

850,507. Compressor and turbine rotor blades. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 9, 1959 [June 11, 1958], No. 8146/59. Class 110 (3). A compressor or turbine rotor having a blade tip shroud comprises inner and outer sheetmetal rings brazed or welded together forming a circumferential channel receiving a tang on each blade tip, the tangs projecting through holes in the shroud and being secured thereto by a pin or rivet. In Fig. 3, a shroud ring 27 consists of an inner ring 28 and a generally " W "-shaped outer ring 29 brazed or welded to ring 28. A tang 32 integral with the blade 26 extends through an opening 33 in the shroud ring which also includes, at each blade position an attachment block 34 brazed to the rings 28 and 29 to provide a rigid attachment for the blade. To lock the tang, a longitudinally split pin 38 is inserted in holes drilled in the outer ring 29 and attachment block 34. In another embodiment (Fig. 8) the blade 51 has two spaced tangs 52 at its tip, which project, through openings 64 in the inner ring 54, into the outer ring 56. Three attachment blocks 61 are brazed within the channels 57, 58, 59 and a pin 66 is inserted through the coaxial holes 62 and 63 to secure the tangs to the shroud. In a further embodiment (Fig. 14), the blade 71 has a single tang 72 attached by rivets 83 to two attachment strips 78 on either side of it. The attachment strips are brazed or welded to the shroud which comprises an inner ring 74 welded to two L-shaped rings 76 and an intermediate ring 77 in segments extending between the blades. In the final embodiment (Fig. 17), the shroud 92 comprises an inner ring 93 and a generally W "- shaped outer ring 94 brazed or welded together. Also brazed to the outer ring on each side of two openings in the rings 93 and 94 are attachmentblocks 96, which enclose the two tangs 98 of blade 91. Pins 101 secure the tangs to the shroud, and may be rivets, as shown, or split tubes, or headed pins retained by snap-rings.
