Abstract

Tantalum is produced by reacting potassium fluostantalate with sodium in an air-free reaction chamber at a temperature sufficiently above 800 DEG C. to maintain the reactants and reaction by-products molten, the sodium being fed to the surface of the liquid fluotantalate and holding the reacted mass at a temperature above the melting point of the by-products for 2 hours before separating tantalum from the product. The tantalum may be separated from the product by leaching with an aqueous acid followed by leaching with an aqueous solution of hydrogen fluoride and hydrogen peroxide.
