A press for briquetting shavings, chips &c. of metal comprises a press chamber, a plunger movable therein, a pre-charging chamber disposed before the charging opening of the press chamber, and a ram reciprocable in the precharging chamber and having a head provided with radially projecting blades. A plurality of press chambers 10 are formed by sleeves 11 mounted in a rotary table 12 which moves each chamber intermittently beneath a pre-charging chamber 16, and pressure plungers 15 which are moved upwards during pressing through openings in covers 14. The chamber 16 is filled with chips &c. by conveyer 18 and a rod 19 carrying a detachable ram head 21 with radially extending downwardly tapering blades 22 thereon is reciprocated vertically, the head 21 entering chamber 10 at each stroke until said chamber has been filled. The table 12 is then actuated and at the next station a plunger enters the opening 17 and plunger 15 is moved upwards: at a further station plunger 15 ejects the briquette. The chamber 16 has a minimum diameter at 25 and its outlet opening 24 is of substantially the same diameter as chamber 10. The under face of the outlet openings is cut away slightly making an angle 27 with table 12 to provide easier lateral movement of the table after filling. The stroke and frequency of reciprocation of the ramming device 19, 21 are adjustable.
